Rock Duffy was having a very hard time deciding what part of his life was more pathetic: having been drummed out of the army after 14 years of loyal service; being forced to become a mercenary just like the men he used to hunt down and arrest; being forced to take a job that one of his greatest rivals and a man he had arrested once had thrown his way like a bone off the Master's table; or the fact that this job now had him here in the Blood Sea, a place he swore he would never go back to, and with the way this job was going, it was probably going to be the death of him.

Mercer hated nobles. There was nothing in this world he hated more. They all looked down their nose at him for being a mercenary, and whenever they hired him to do a job, they always acted as though they were doing him a favor, not that he was saving them from whatever predicament they had gotten themselves into. He commanded more men than most nobles, had a larger fortress and more money, and yet they still thought they could demand his presence like he was a stable boy in their employ. It always put his back up, which is probably exactly why he went out of his way not to get this job, but despite his efforts, here he was hunting down a runaway noble. Life just could not get peachier.
