Madison had been declared mentally unstable as a teenager and after the death of her parents, her older brother Charles had been appointed her legal guardian and controlled every aspect of her life.  Charles was calm and cool under pressure.  He was also considered sane and rational, which is why when he burst into her apartment one night ranting on about how he had been magically transported to another world which was governed by an invisible monster and if he did not return within the next hour the monster was going to come after his family and tear them to pieces, she found herself quite alarmed.  Even worse than that, she believed him, but that is exactly what someone would expect from her, so of course there was nothing to do but steal the crystal and jump off a building.

Chance Saint Edwards, The Right Honorable Twelfth Earl of Tricastle, liked having people under his thumb.  He liked when they owed him money.  It made them more useful to him and he found even the most worthless of society could be of use to him.  After all, they had ears and because they were considered so worthless, people often spoke unguardedly around them.  Amongst the most worthless had to be Adrian Mitchell, an arrogant, overdressed little toad who could not even play a decent game of cards, but to his amazement, even the worthless Mr. Mitchell had suddenly become of value.
